Anthony Bailes: GAUTIER , Apollon orateur
The association of Denis Gaultier with Apollo in a 17th c. lute manuscript is not as audacious as it might at first appear: the lutenist was held in great esteem by his contemporaries; indeed, for many he was the embodiment of genius on the lute, the “nonpareil”, and one of the very few capable of “speaking” to his listeners. At first glance, his compositions seem little different from those of his collegues, but further examination reveals a sophistication unparalleled in any other lute music of the period. One is immediately struck by the economy of the writing, in which no note is superfluous and the musical structure reduced to its essence. This minimalist approach is even more apparent in later, published versions which show subtle traces of revision. Denis Gaultier exploited the instrument to the full, and in doing so take the art of lute-playing to a realm undreamt of by elder colleagues. His music placed great demands on the lutenist, lute and listener alike for, knowing what could be achieved, Gaultier chose to push the instrument to its limits, and everyone else along with it. http://www.ramee.org/0904gb.html

Mignarda: Au Pres de Vous: 16th century chansons for lute & voice
We're happy to announce the release of our 6th CD, Au Pres de Vous. Recorded in the warm and vibrant acoustic of an old country church, our latest release explores the important marriage of music, poetry and dance tunes of sixteenth century France. The composers of these chansons and psalm settings - including Sermisy, Janequin, Crecquillon, Lassus, and our favorite, Philip Van Wilder - were inspired by the eloquent grace and the passionate artifice of poets Marot and Ronsard, among others. Notable among the several previously unrecorded chansons are three completely unique settings of 'Pour un plaisir', a forgotten 16th century hit. Lute solos include dances and preludes from the publications of Attaignant and Phalese, and ricercars and fantasias from Marco dal l'Aquila and 'il divino' Francesco da Milano. Au pres de vous can be purchased now directly from us at http://www.mignarda.com/cds . Single-song and full-album MP3 downloads will be available soon at Amazon.com, CD Baby, iTunes, or your favorite download site.

New Pantagruel CD
We are happy to announce that our new CD, Laydie Louthians Lilte is now available from www.pantagruel.de. Click here to Order. This time the scene moves from Elizabethan England of our last CD Elizium to Jacobean Scotland, presenting the whole gamut of “wordly” music that was played back in early 17th century Scotland. So alongside the Scots dances and songs there are lute songs by John Dowland, Robert Johnson, Robert Jones & Thomas Ford and English Broadside ballads. There are a number of those “World Premiere Recording” things, including the “Yee Gods of Love”, an amazingly beautiful lament of distant Irish origin, plus the equally memorable but more up-tempo “Over the Mountains”, “Then Wilt thou goe”. One of the abslute highlights is the just over 8 minute long epic “Venus & Adonis”, combining excerpts from the famous Shakespeare’s poem, a “never before recorded” ballad text (sorry to mention it again, but some people really get off on this never before recorded stuff) and lots of wild cittern and Bass-lute “riffing” (All of the cittern pieces have also never been recorded before J). It was recorded in Colnrade, a small village in North Germany, (you can see a “Making of Video”, listen to MP3 excerpts at out MySpace Blog here). The local church has been used for a number of award winning recordings and had an absolutely fantastic acoustic. It comes in one of those new fangled fancy Discbox-Slider, with a CD in good old fashioned Vinyl look and a fold out text sheet.
Les Baricades Mistérieuses : Couperin, Gaultier, Kellner, Weiss, Gallot.

Miguel Serdoura, luth baroque http://musique.fnac.com/a2526660/Couperin-Les-Baricades-misterieuses-CD-album?PID=2&Mn=-1&Ra=-29&To=0&Nu=1&Fr=3

Though variant tunings having already appeared during the first years of the sixteenth century, the first part of the seventeenth century saw a great number of tunings emerge, the most successful being those occurring in Pierre Ballard’s 1631 and 1638 publications of Tablatures de Luth de Differents Autheurs sur les Accords Nouveaux. Three out of these four accords nouveaux produce a superb resonance, but all share the disadvantage of being restricted to certain keys, modulation being often accompanied by a distinct deterioration in tone quality. It was no doubt this factor which contributed to their decline in popularity and the subsequent acceptance of the fourth one, the d minor tuning, which was less susceptible to this problem and remained the standard lute tuning until the instrument’s demise in the late eighteenth century. The accords nouveaux gained widespread acceptance and inspired players to produce some of the most sublime music ever created for the lute – some of which can be heard on this recording, played by the great English lutenist Anthony Bailes.

Weiss, Concerto for two lutes, Suites

"All the music here comes from two related manuscripts, only recently discovered. They were located in the library of Count Harrach, amongst the collections held in the family Schloss at Rohrau, east of Vienna (and home to an important private art collection). Prior to the Harrach library being transferred from Vienna to Rohrau in 1970, most of the music manuscripts in it were sold. The significance of these two manuscripts was perhaps not recognised at the time. One of the two manuscripts carries the title ‘Weiss Sylvio – Lautenmusik’; there are 64 pages in the manuscript and pretty well all of the works in it can safely be attributed to Weiss. The other manuscript is headed ‘Laten Musik von unbekannten Componisten’ (Lute music by unknown composers); this manuscript contains 65 pages and, again, pretty well all can be confidently attributed to Weiss, either because they are versions of compositions known to be his from other sources or on clear stylistic grounds. Some pieces from the manuscripts appeared in the anthology Klingende Schätze aus Schloss Rohrau, issued by Cavalli (CCD 446) in 2005 along with works by Angelo Ragazzi, Vivaldi, Francesco Alborea and Gottfried Finger. Now we have premiere recordings of more material from the manuscripts, most notably the Concerto for two lutes. I believe that this is the first time that the music for one of Weiss’s duos has been found complete. There is other music here which was already known, though it turns up in company with different companions as it were, in different sequences of movements and so on." www.atmaclassic.com
Corbetta, La Ghirlanda Mosicale

(http://www.dynamic.it).
